About Screen Resolution:

It is the number of pixels on your entire screen. A 1024 x 768 screen resolution means your screen display 1024 pixels in width and 768 in height.

An important notion is the ratio. The most common ratio is 1.33 (4/3 if you prefer this notation) and the 1.25.
Try to do 1024/768 = 1.333333 etc...
1280/1024 = 1.25
Wide screens are designed for native resolutions with a different ratio (16/10 or 16/9).

You need to know what is your current resolution. Do a right-click somewhere on your desktop, and choose "properties" then "settings".
IMPORTANT: before you change it, remember LCD screens are designed for a single recommended screen resolution: the native resolution. Verify you are using it (and read the manual of your screen).
Most often we have (1.33 or 1.25 ratios):
15 inchs: 1024 x 768
17 inchs: 1280 x 1024
19 inchs: 1600 x 1200

Set up my desktop wallpaper (example with windows XP):

Download a version for your resolution, and open it on your hard disk. Do a right-click and select "Set as Background" or maybe "Set as wallpaper".
